Can someone be pulled over for having things tied to their roof rack?

I friend of mine was pulled over for having things on his roof rack and then was given a ticket for no insurance and not having his license on him. To me it seems a little odd that you can be pulled over for having things tied to your roof rack considering that's what it's for. And if the cop didn't have probable cause for pulling him over he shouldn't have gotten the tickets.

  1. Cops will do whatever they want and get away with it. I got pulled over because the cop said my license plate didn't match my car, but as it turns out, he typed it wrong. Why was he searching my license plate? He probably didn't. He just felt like pulling me over.
  2. If he had his insurance and his license on him he wouldn't have gotten the tickets either.
  3. Cops do what they want to do. Understand that early in life and you'll save yourself alot of problems and misunderstanding about our great law enforcement and justice system. Depends on what is tied to your roof and if it looks dangerous and not secured properly then of course he'll get pulled.
  4. The police have the right to pull you over if it looks unsafe;as far as your buddy goes ;hes stupid no insurance and carrying somthing on his roof?
  5. If the stuff tied to the top of his car looked unsafe and in the officers opinion in could fall or blow off on the road he had probable cause for a traffic stop. As far as no Ins. and not having his D.L. on him. He should have known better.
  6. You never said what "things" were tied to the roof rack. If the state of city you live in has a law against certain things on a vehicle, then the cop has PC (probable cause) to pull you over and can write a citation for any violations he finds. Look up the laws in your state, know your rights and if something was wrong, fight the ticket.
