Ways to tie camping items to your roof bars?
I have a set of thule roof bars for my citroen zx, 5 of us going camping in a fortnight, need to try and fit stuff on the roof as the car will be packed to the gills! I need suggestions on the best way to tie stuff to the roof, be it using bungee ropes or a cargo net, planks of wood to sit stuff on or if someone knows anyone with a roof box I can borrow for a weekend (I will rent!) that would be FANTASTIC! I live near Huntingdon in cambs uk. Any ideas gratefully recieved!!

- tie your items down with ratchet straps.these will really secure them
- If you are looking for a cheap way to do this I would say go and get a piece of ply wood drill two holes big enough to fit some rope through and tie the ply wood down in six different places three on the front and three on the back one on each corner and one in the middle both front and back. Dont use bungees because you cant get them tight enough and some times they break and then you are up a creek without a paddle I hope this is what you are looking for
- Use bungee cords. Stretch them across the stuff, and you can use a tarp above and below to protect your car, and cover the stuff in case of rain.
- go to Halfords and get some 4 roof rack straps and a load of bungie straps, super glue and some tarp. Place the largest sized items on to the roof rack (surfboards etc??) and use two of the straps to secure them down - Ask the guys at Halfords how to secure the straps down properly. next tie as much on to the larger objects as possible with bungee straps and rope to what ever is available. Throw tarp/mesh etc over it and secure with the second set of straps. I was joking about the glue.
- get a big waterproof tarp, let it hang over in the front of the car, pack your bags, then wrap the tarp so the water from rain will not get in and secure with a few bungee's, i did this on a 700 mile trip, nothing got wet, nothing was damaged good luck and have fun camping
