Car Luggage Carriers

Can you just strap a large suitcase to the roof of a car with car clips, lashing straps and a non-skid pad?

Do you have to have a car-top carrier or a luggage rack?

  1. You certainly can, but, the best way to ensure that your luggage makes the full journey you make is to get one of those car-top carriers. They are designed to be strapped to the roof of your car travelling at highway speeds. Try craigslist or ebay if you're strapped for cash...I'm sure you can get a used one for a decent price, and if you're only going one way, you may only have to use it once!
  2. Yes, you can. It may dent your roof if it's heavy and will cost you gas milage since it will cause extra wind drag on the car. Be sure to make it tight and recheck it after driving a few miles.
