Luggage Carriers Knowledge Base
Does anybody know of a good Luggage carrier for a car without a rack? Does anybody know of a good luggage carrier to carry suitcases and whatnot for a 1,000 mile trip this summer? We used to have a Sears X-Cargo (i think that's what it was called) that did the trick. It had enough to hold about 8-10 decent sized suitcases. I'm looking for something similar that doesn't need a rack on the roof. It will be used on a Hyundai Elantra. Please point me in the right direction. I can't find anything useful on the web!
How do i use a bicycle luggage carrier? I have just bought a new bike with a rear mounted luggage carrier and I have no idea how to use it. Do i need to buy cabels to clip bags on to it? Or a pannier? Thanks
how do you use a luggage carrier on a minni van? We bought a used luggage carrier and they didn't have instructions. can someone help with how to put it on our van. We have the racks already on the van. We are just not sure how to use the luggage carrier.
Is it illegal to have a luggage rack covering your licence plate? i am thinking of buying one of those luggage carriers that go on the back of your suv. it hooks onto the ball hitch, but when i put luggage in it the license plate will be covered. there's no spot to put the plat on the rack either. will i get pulled over? if so why do they make them? Thanks
How do you store luggage on top of your car? We are going on a road trip with 5 of our friends in a few days. We have a jeep commander that is a 7 passenger, but with the back seats being used there is ZERO room for luggage. How do we store stuff up on top safely without having to buy a luggage carrier? We have luggage rails.
Any suggestions for luggage racks/cargo carriers for convertibles? I was looking for suggestions for luggage racks or cargo carriers for a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible. I found the kind that attach to the trailer hitch like this one: http://www.etrailer.com/pc-CC114~52017.htm The only problem with the type pictured above that the hitch from Chrysler is only rated for a tongue weight of 100 lbs. If the carrier already weighs 50 lbs it seems like a lot of trouble to go through to carry 50 lbs. I asked about changing the hitch to a proper class one hitch that would be rated for the full 200 lbs tongue weight but I've had a couple of places tell me that it's a bad idea to exceed the recommended 100 lb limit set by Chrysler. (because the extra weight may mess up the suspension/ the steering etc.) Does anyone have any alternate ideas, products, suggestions? Thank you both for the info & opinions.
Can I buy air tickets online from different carriers and still have my checked baggage reach the destination? I have an international flight from an asian country back to my home in the US. My favorite carrier does not fly to my home town airport so I'm going to have to get two plane tickets from two different carriers. (Emirates and then Jet Blue) I will have checked in luggage and I want to know if it would be possible to check in all my baggage and just pick it up from the home town airport with out having to re-check all the luggage at my port of entry.
How safe is it to check a dog as luggage with an airport? I'm looking into adopting a dog sometime next month, and would like to take it with me on a trip sometime next year. The flight will be about an hour, and I've heard very mixed things about how airport workers handle animals as luggage. I'm unsure of the size of the dog, as I've yet to adopt, but I've also heard that if a dog is small enough, you can take it on the plane in a cat-size carrier. Any knowledge on this? If there's any chance of injury, I'll just drive up.
international travellers, do carriers (PAL) weigh your hand carry luggage? it says on PAL's website that my: 1) check-in baggage should not exceed 20 kilos and the 2) handcarried luggage should be only 1 and not exceed 7 kilos. i've been to different countries (w/ an adult) but i usually don't think about such stuff because i only bring one medium-sized suitcase (check-in). i also don't carry any hand bags with me on-board because somebody holds it for me. but now, i've got lots to bring so i'm worried because it's my 1st time travelling alone. i don't wanna pay extra for my excess baggage so please answer me. i know that they're definitely going to make sure that my check-in baggage is w/in the specified rate. but i was wondering if i could put more than 7 kilos in my handcarried baggage. 1) my dad who's a frequent traveller said that i can bring a small suitcase and a backpack with me on-board --but i don't believe him because according to PAL, i should only bring 1. 2) my mom who just arrived said that she just entered the plane with a handcarried luggage (17X23 inches i think) and nobody weighed it --but i'm still not confident because PAL said that it should be exactly 7 kilos. what about you?
How much to tip when in America? Hi Im going from England to San Francisco and Las vegas, this tipping thing is really confusing to me. I read you tip restaurants, taxis 15%, then like $1 for hotel luggage carriers, bar staff, door openers etc but then somewhere else you read something different... Can someone clarify would really appreciate it.. Don't want to get it wrong and offend someone
Any tips for changing airline carriers during the same flight? At the end of May, I will be flying from Birmingham, AL to St.Paul, Minnesota. I start the flight on American Airlines, lay over in Chicago, then continue to MSP on Northwest Airlines. I'm concerned about my luggage and any potential problems during this flight. I have a 1 hour layover flying from BHM to MSP and I have a 3 hour layover on the flight home with the same airline change. I welcomed any advise or guidance
Will my luggage be lost if I have a connecting flight? I am going to be traveling in the next month or two, and I will have to have 1 connecting flight to my final destination. Is it safe to have a bag checked in and still have it show up when I reach the end? I am scared that if I check it in and I change planes it will end up lost. I have traveled before, but only with a carry-on. I will be gone a week and need a big bag. Does it matter if I swap carriers? Or should I look for a flight that stays with the same one? Any advice from experienced travelers? Thanks!
Getting off half way on a connecting flight & luggage? We've got a return ticket from Amsterdam via London to Jakarta with Singapore Airline. However, on the way back we want to get off at London (cause that's where we live) with our luggage (!!) and skip the last part to Amsterdam. Does anyone know how we can make sure that our luggage is taken off at Heathrow and doesn't end up in Amsterdam? Any experience here with Singapore Airline or another carrier? Thanks in advance!
How can you keep your checked-in luggage weight under 15kg (for Ryan Air flights in the U.K)? We will be flying into the U.K. in August from Australia. Our international air carrier allows 20kg. My wife is extremely nervous that she will be over that weight allowance, let alone being under 15kg for our Ryan Air flights. Ryan Air charge 8 euros per kg over! Sounds like a rip-off. So, my question really is: what measures can we take to reduce our checked-in luggage weight to 15 kg? Should we wear all our heavy clothing on the plane over? Should we take just enough clothes for a few days and wash and dry them frequently on our travels? We would really appreciate any helpful feedback you can give us.
My cat and I are moving to England and she has to be placed in the luggage compartment? What can I do to make this easier on her? I hate the thought of her being in her carrier for the better part of the day even with good weather but how can she "go" and how can I set up her food and water? Help! In order to comply with the laws in England my cat has to be in the luggage compartment in addtion to some other minor requirements. We want to make a good impression on the customs & immigration people :-)

Stowing luggage in a truck bed? Hello, What's the best method when putting luggage in a truck bed to prevent it from getting wet. Driving 12 hours down to florida so I am pretty sure we will hit a storm or two. Could I just buy a car cargo carrier and just sit it in the bed of the truck, I would think the weight of the luggage would keep it in place. Would a 20 dollar tarp work. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.
What do you think about United Airlines' new $25.00 fee for a second pc. of luggage? Since United is implementing a $25.00 charge for a 2nd bag/suitcase when flying with their company, will this make a difference when you (or the public in general) are deciding which carrier to book a flight from? I'm curious to see if the added expense will change how people select airline travel. They say the "extra" luggage fee is to combat the increased fuel costs. Any thoughts?
Me, my dog and luggage Mexico City to Acapulco, can't fly - anyone with a firiend/ family with car ?? I am moving to Acapulco and am bringing my rather large Doberman Pinscher with me. Well due to his size and large carrier he will only fit on a 757 aircraft. I can get that type of aircraft into Mexico City but no 757's are flying into Acapulco.I need to get me, my dog and luggage from the Mexico City airport and drive to Acapulco. Thought of a taxi and havent ruled it out. Any body have a family/ friend ith a car/truck in either city that wants to make a buck?? Surely someone out there has a friend that could help and make some money and day trip to Acapulco on my dime !!!
Luggage when traveling with multiple carrier? I have flown with multiple carriers but have always booked using one website (orbitz, travelocity, ect.). But this time I am planning on going to London and would like to travel with Virgin Atlantic but they do not fly out of my home airport. I have found cheap airfare for my home city to nyc (on travelocity) and nyc to london (on virgin atlanic). If I book on seperate airlines websites will I run the risk of lossing my luggage how will this work???

HELP! I've never flown on a plane before, where do I pick up the luggage??? Hi! This might sound like a stupid question but I need to know if I have to pick up my luggage every time I change planes. I've never flown before so this is all new to me. I have a flight that goes to Paris but stops first in Houston and then in Orlando; the carrier changes from one to another. Do I have to pick up my luggage at each stop or will the airline move my luggage to the next plane, even though the first airline to Houston is one company and the one to Louisiana is another. Sorry if this is confusing; I really am clueless! I don't want my luggage to get lost, so any help would be appreciated.
What vaccinations and documentation do you need to obtain a dog passport? Next year I want to take my dog to visit my sister in Italy. I know she will need a rabies vaccination (The dog, NOT my sister!!!).... is that it? What vaccinations do they need so they can have a passport? She has the "normal" vaccinations, the ones all puppy's have. Has anyone had the rabies vaccination for their dog? How many jabs is it and how long does it take for them to be "immune" and protected? She is a small dog, Bichon Frise, would she be allowed to travel on the plane with me (hand luggage) or would she have to go in the back with the suit cases and luggage? Are smaller dogs allowed in with the people ( as hand held luggage) if they are in a carrier / crate / flight container thing? I think I saw some sort of bag you can use to carry small dogs in for domestic flights? Has anyone done this with their dog? Is it terribly expensive? If you have the passport and vaccinations all sorted out does that mean no quarantine? Thanks for any useful info!
How do you attach a rooftop cargo carrier with 4 straps to a 02 Ford Escape luggage rack? The straps are on the sides and the metal clips are shaped to fit between the door and the frame of a sedan but it's apparent that the luggage rack is the only way it could possibly work on the escape. I hooked it to the inside lip of the track on the Escape's rack, but I'm worried that lip isn't big enough. It's an older Sears rooftop carrier. Thanks! The rack isn't in the way, I have to use it because the clips are "j" shaped and they won't fit the large lip of the rear door frames.
Are thin bicycle road tires suitable for the city? I just bought a second-hand road bicycle to commute around town. It has a lightweight frame, mudguards, luggage carrier, normal handlebars (not drop handlebars), and I guess it is not a racing bike. But the tires are very thin. The Question is: how good are these thin tires suited for the city? I'm not doing any off-road riding. The town where I live has a very good infrastructure for riding bikes (i.e. separate lanes, lowered curbs...), but there are still some bumps, different pavements and tram rails and such. I heard that thin wheels are not suitable for riding on rough terrain, because bumps bend them. Is that correct? How rough is "rough" in that case? Are the city pavements rough? (I realized that thing about the tires late, but I can still return the bike) P.S.: If needed, I can measure the width of the tires/rim.
What's the best travel toddler car seat carrier? I need to travel with two toddler car seats (big forward facing Graco seats). I will have to check one of these at the curb (instead of gate checking) because I'm traveling by myself and can't carry both seats AND both kids through the airport. I'm looking for a durable carrier that could possibly survive luggage check in at an airport and also one that I could carry or drag through the airport...while toting two preschoolers. I will probably be buying two carriers. Any suggestions? I have rented a carseat from a car rental place and will NEVER do it again. It was the most disgusting car seat I have ever seen. It clearly had never been cleaned and it's safety was questionable. Unfortunately, the rental place only had ONE car seat available to rent. The only way I will travel with my kids is if I can bring along their carseats because I know they are clean & safe.
How do I check a bicycle as luggage? I'm flying my brother to New Orleans (ABQ to MSY) in June of 2008. He is a bicycling enthusiast and would like to bring his Fixie with him, also it's way cheaper than renting a car. I've never flown with or checked a bicycle. I understand that most airlines will allow you to check a bicycle as opposed to an extra piece of luggage as long as it's packed a certain way. I'm currently looking at either Continental or Delta for his flight. My main point of confusion is the new $25 fee for an additional piece of luggage. I've read that this fee is only incurred when flying with multiple carriers for one trip. He will be flying one way and most flights I've looked at are single carrier. If he checks one piece of luggage and his bike, plus whatever additonal carry on he happens to have, does this fee apply? I am trying my best to make this flight as inexpensive as possible.
What is the cheapest way to send a large package to Australia I'm looking to send a 25 lb. package to Australia from the United States (east coast). While USPS has removed the cheap and popular Sea-Mail/Surface-Mail option, they still provide the best rate (around $130). Most other major carriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL) are up around $475. Has anyone experienced a shipping company that will ship for less? Have you had good luck with a shipping company that does sea-mail travel? Is there a cheaper luggage-shipping site that I'm not finding that has decent rates for sea-mail? Serious and informative answers only, please. Thank everyone!
Pet safe flight carriers? I am moving to Canada sometime in the near future from the States. Was wondering if anyone could suggest a could flight co. to fly with if you are traveling with pets? I have a cat that will be flying with me, due to being a paranoid pet owner and hearing some pretty bad stories I would prefer to keep him in the cabin with me....are there any flight carriers that will allow this? or do all pets have to go with the luggage? Thanks for your help Thank you so much Doc Savage...I went and checked out United Airlines and they do indeed accept cats for carry on. I appreciate your help
Traveling to Italy with 2 cats and an Italian Greyhound, what do I need? To take the cats on as carry-on, and the dog in luggage? What are aproved carriers? Should I not feed them a few hours before? should I feed them on the plane? To sedate or not to? (9hr flight) This will be a summer time flight, non-stop (still 9hrs. and dording so 10), the dog (Jackie) weighs 17-18lb the cats around 15. how large of a crate should I get for Jackie he's oh say 16-18" tall. I'm not sure if getting him a big one is a good idea, pros: lots of room and I could put in a mock litterbox for him to relive himself, cons: he could be tossed side to side in it!!!(I think). Thank you All!!! and if you have travel tips I would love to hear them!!! Unfortunatly, Jackie just can't ride as carry on (he's too tall) . I am going over with two other people so If he was shorter he could come. When we arrive two people will be there to meet us and take the responsibility of getting the pets through customs for us (luckly, no sleep + stress + jet lag +language barrior + 3 pets through customs = BAD) ANy tips would be great though!!! ***drezdogge*** I will be living there for two years, and my cat at this time is indoor outdoor... the other stristly indoor... Is it safe to continue to let my cat outside? Do you know of any way too help keep my dog safe, he's tiny and skinny (looking like all greyhounds do) and I'm afraid of him getting tossed around. Also would a cooling pad be a good idea for the bottom of his crate, seeing as it will be summer?
