Car Luggage Carriers

Is it illegal to have a car battery well-secured and inside a cargo box on the roof of your car? I'm planning to install a power inverter in my minivan with a long long battery life so I can run an air conditioner and stuff with the car turned off. This will give me more room inside and also keep away the hydrogen gas which builds up during battery charging which is explosive. Any suggestions are welcome as well. Thank you kindly.
Does a roof-top cargo container exist for cars without a roof rack? I am looking to pack up my car to move to Florida from Pennsylvania. I drive a Honda Civic, which does not have a roof rack. Does anyone have any suggestions on doing a cargo container without damaging my car? Does it exist and where can I find it?
can you rig up one of those cargo bags for the roof of your car to work with no roof rack? We have a 2004 Honda Element Ex we do not have a roof rack on it.
Where can I find a place that rents cargo boxes that go on top of car roofs? I've been searching online and I can't seem to find a place that rents those cargo/storage boxes that can fit on top of an suv. Any ideas? Thanks!
Getting a CARGO CARRIER for the roof of my car..I have questions! :S? http://www.rei.com/category/4501515 With carriers such as those on that site, do I need to buy anything else to put this on my car? My car is getting racks put on soon first and once we have those, I know the carrier will go on that, but do I need to purchase something to hold the carrier to the racks or does it come with something? I hope someone gets what I'm asking and knows from experience. :) Thanks!!!
Roof box cargo bags help needed? I have just had a scoot around the internet looking for Roof boxes to hire and have come across cargo bags instead that fold flat when not in use. Not only are these much cheaper, but the convenience of being able to store one is tempting me more than hiring the traditional hard case box. Has anybody got any reviews on these and any reccomendations. I am concerned that they would not be secure but they fit with straps to the roof bars and surely they would need to pass testing to be sold with the description they come with. I think I am after reassurance that they would not fly off the car at speed and next weeks washing end up on someones windscreen!!! No, they are sold as external bags. They look sturdy and are 100% waterproof but its something I have never seen before, hence, would like to know more before considering purchasing.
What is the maximum weight of cargo that I could put on the roof of a...? 2008 Kia Optima LX sedan? I am thinking of tying a 95 pound package to the top and I am curious to know if this will damage the car in any way. Thanks, and Cheers!
Adding cargo capacity to VW Routan: roof top? or hitch based? Planning on a trip in our new VW Routan. Between two kids and another person in the back there is not much space left for cargo. Stroller, cooler, beach stuff and everything else wife decides to pack for two-week vacation trip just wont fit inside the car. I'm trying to decide whether to add - roof top - rack (no factory railings so will need to install those and I want the permanent ones, not clamp-ons) and then a box or a bag. Pros - no need to remove, at least the rack. Cons: wind resistance (drag), might not fit into every garage. - get a hitch with a hitch cargo carrier like this one: http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/SportRack/A30850.html. Pros: easy access, less drag. Cons: Opening the rear door will be trivial unless I get one of those swinging racks. Bag may get slashed when we stop for a meal break, leaving the car out of sight. I'm leaning towards towards the hitch option. Always found it to be more practical. Can anyone speak from personal experience?
Cheapest, easiest way to get to camping trip, when car doesn't seat enough? I have a camping trip planned. With five people, there isn't enough room to fit in my small car. Rental vans are over $300.00. What are those cargo type cases on top of cars called? Does anyone know what exactly they're called, how much they run, and whether or not a roof rack comes with or is required? Thanks!
Best cargo area in a 2dr Civic? Roof Racks? Hi! So I have a 1999 2dr Civic DX-G --no sunroof. It was very recently decided that I'd be the driver on a 600 mile round trip from the BC interior to the Sasquatch Festival in Washington, and there will be 5 of us traveling, so it'll be packed. I was just wondering if anyone had some clever insight for how I could haul all of these people and all of their junk, because we'll be taking tents, coolers, food, luggage, not to mention shopping, and we'll be gone for 9 days. That's a lot of pressure to put on my trunk which is already compromised with some subwoofers. I was wondering if it's possible to get a roof rack for a 2 door or if they're only for 4 doors? Can you rent these and put them on temporarily? I don't want a roof rack forever, I hate them, but I don't know what else I can do aside from strapping garbage bags to the roof, which is pretty ghetto and also asking for us to get robbed. Any insight is appreciated :) Similar car: http://www.digi-go.biz/kbk1aaa/dsc_0002.jpg
Does anybody know of a good Luggage carrier for a car without a rack? Does anybody know of a good luggage carrier to carry suitcases and whatnot for a 1,000 mile trip this summer? We used to have a Sears X-Cargo (i think that's what it was called) that did the trick. It had enough to hold about 8-10 decent sized suitcases. I'm looking for something similar that doesn't need a rack on the roof. It will be used on a Hyundai Elantra. Please point me in the right direction. I can't find anything useful on the web!

I need to find instructions for a Rubbermaid cargo topper..? Cant find any info at the Rubbermaid site or anywhere else. Just need instructions on how it connects to the car. I dont have a roof rack, do I need one for this carrier?
Ways to tie camping items to your roof bars? I have a set of thule roof bars for my citroen zx, 5 of us going camping in a fortnight, need to try and fit stuff on the roof as the car will be packed to the gills! I need suggestions on the best way to tie stuff to the roof, be it using bungee ropes or a cargo net, planks of wood to sit stuff on or if someone knows anyone with a roof box I can borrow for a weekend (I will rent!) that would be FANTASTIC! I live near Huntingdon in cambs uk. Any ideas gratefully recieved!!
Car shopping... suggestions? I'm going car shopping for my first car, and I'm looking for opinions from experienced drivers. Here's what I'm looking for: v6 cylinder engine (good gas with a decently sexy roar while driving) 150+ horsepower 18-28 mpg model range of 2009-2011 high safety ratings (MUST!) heated seats moon roof back spoiler cargo capacity of 4-5 (MUST!) 2 door leather seats automatic transmission (MUST!) all wheel drive I'm a very small girl of 5 feet, so a small car is what I think would fit best for me. My price range is anywhere from 12,000 - 28,000.

Jeep with leaky roof!!!? I drive a 92 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. Its leaking water from the roof. These are the two locations: front of the roof liner just to left of the rear view mirror. The back of the roof liner also on the left side (driver side of the car). The leak on the front doesn't drip it just saturates the roof liner. And the leak on the back drips into the cargo area as well as saturating the roof liner. What I want to know is: Does any one have any suggestions as to where the leaks are starting and does anyone know if the leaks are connected in some way? PS I have checked all the weather stripping on the doors and they are all in great shape. Please help rain is projected for the rest of the week!
How do I know I'm getting a good deal on a new car? I'm looking at buying a new 2009 Nissan Rogue. It's going to be fully loaded, here's a list of the features: AWD Premium Package (includes Xenon Headlights); Leather package; Portable Navigation system; Rear spoiler; Bumper guard; Floor mats (yes, that's extra according to their website); Moonroof; Roof rails w/ crossbars; Splash Guards; Chrome Grille; Cargo cover; a Pin Stripe and then the other standard features including XM radio; Cruise Control; Power windows & locks; keyless ignition; ABS; Garage door opener; Bluetooth; steering wheel controls; and the list goes on. They are also including some special paint job that keeps scratches from rusting or something like that. I don't see that feature on their website nor on edmunds.com but it's got a sticker price of $800ish. According to the sticker price on the lot, it's $31.5k. Trying to build the same car on the website comes out to $30.5k but I can't add the pin stripe and paint protection thing (which on the sticker equals about $1k). After emphasizing the lack of need for certain features (navigation, pin stripe, splash guards, chrome grille) and emphasizing the need to try to keep this within a budget, they broke it down to... ::drumroll:: $26.5k. According to edmunds.com: the Invoice price (without the pin stripe and paint protection) is $27.8k and "what others are paying" is $28.4k With all that said and comparing it to edmunds, it seems like a good deal. I believe this $26.5k price already includes the $750 cash back incentive and it comes with 2.9% financing. All in all, I believe this is a good deal but being my first NEW car where I can negotiate, I want to make sure I got it to a reasonable price. I think I did but I'd like others opinions. I apologize for the long question but leaving out one detail can reflect a big price difference. Thanks! I forgot to mention, it is the SL model. According to KBB: New Car Blue Book Value= $29k; Invoice=$27.8k; MSRP=$29.7 Nada.com: Invoice=$27.8k and MSRP=$30.3k After all this, it appears I'm getting an offer below the invoice price. With 2.9% financing and putting about 10% down, the monthly payments will be somewhere in the $425/mo range.
is there such a thing as a luggage rack for a car trunk? my husband has booked us a trip in las vegas next month. unfortunately, there are four of us and we're going by car (toyota corolla) and from where we live, it's a 36 hour drive if we drove non-stop. since one of our group is a 6 month old, we need a fair bit of stuff for this trip (just to get there, never mind the week we'll be there for). we're packing as light as we can but we just can't get it all in the car. is there such a thing as a rack of any sort that you could put on the trunk (like a luggage rack or any rack you'd put on the roof, but for the trunk instead)? we'd rather not have it on the roof if possible since it will create more wind resistance (and cost more in gas) but it's actually likely we'll need a rack on the roof AND on the trunk (we have a roof rack already that we can put on and cargo bag for it). oh, and in case it makes a difference, we're in canada. also, we'd like to try to spend as little as possible (hence driving 36 hours for a last minute 200$/week rental haha). thanks!

Would a Ford Escape Suit a high school student? Im looking to lease a new 2009 Ford Escape with "all the bells and whistles" (Limited, 4WD, Navigation, Luxury package, 17" wheels, Moon & Tune package, Cargo package, Roof rack, remote stat, sync, and leather) Is this a good car for a High school student who might then take it to college for a year or two? sorry i dont mean for it to sound braggy other cars that i was considering were much more expensive (BMW 328xi, Audi a4, etc.)
Increase horsepower 2000 saturn? I have a 2000 saturn with the 1.9 single cam, 240,000 miles. It's going to be driving up to alaska shortly. To haul all my crap, I installed a Yakima cargo box to the roof. The car moves fine, except going up hills now. I need to downshift with even the slightest incline. I figure I only need 10 more horses...I ordered a cold air intake...think that will do it? Note that I don't want to turn my economy car into some stupid looking/sounding fake race car nor do I want to rebuild the engine till I get up there....just some simple mods. What about those Platinum 4-arc point Bosch spark plugs? Thanks

How should I mount my cb antenna? I have a black 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. I'm thinking about a 3ft Firestik toploaded antenna and maybe a firestik magnetic mount on the center of the roof. I've read you lose some power using a magnetic mount but how much? I'm a little bit nervous about drilling a mount into the roof of my car and a magnetic mount is super convenient. Also if the antenna hits something when it's mounted by magnet it wont rip a hole in the roof. If I dont go with a magnetic mount what is the best way to mount to the roof? I could also mount to the plastic cargo rack on top but would that require a NGP antenna set up? Would that be the best way to go? I am trying to find a balance between power and looking good. I dont want a huge antenna so I'm know I am sacrificing with only a 3ft antenna. Also, I am using a Cobra 29 CB radio. thank you
Contractor building garage with wrong door? I’m having a double wide (16’) garage built to replace my carport. The bid was for a garage door with an 8’ height. I have a tall SUV with a cargo basket on the roof so I wanted the extra height. My car will fit (barely) into 7’ door but I’d have to unload the cargo basket each time before I do so. Yesterday they installed the framing, trusses and most of the outside paneling. After the crew left for the day I measured the door and discovered that it was only 7’ high. I have a call into the contracter about this. However, given all the work that has been done I suspect that it would be very difficult to change this to an 8’ door at this time. I suspect that the contractor will try to offer me some type of discount off the construction cost and accept the 7’ door. If I decide to accept this, what would be reasonable? How much cheaper is to build a double garage with a 7’ door then a 8’ door? I know that an 8’ door itself is more expensive because its non-standard. However, I suspect that there are other costs involved in making a garage with this additional height. How much is the contractor saving by building it with an 7’ door? Thanks for the answers that I received so far. I think the changes necessary to change to an 8' door may be more than those proposed in the answers. There is a 4" x 12" beam above the opening that would have to be raised. The framing that this is supported on would have to be re-done. I'm not sure if changing any of this would impact the trusses. The purchase agreement clearly stipulated an 8' door.
Where to go next? I have pretty nice setup. I have 3 amps powering 2 (4 someday) subs, and all my components. I was just wondering what would be a good use of my car's stereo outputs (4 x 16rms). Should I get more component speakers? Where to put them? What kind? In a box? Also, I want to add 2 10" subs to my car but am almost out of room in the trunk. Is it possible to put them on the cargo deck (between 6x9's) or will that sound bad? I am open to any suggestions. I have a nominal skill level with audio stuff but am lacking in the customization field. So just don't suggest that I add speakers to the roof or something stupid like that. Please help, I have run out of things to waste my money on!
2008 RAV 4 Base - Purchase? I am attempting to do some negotiation with various dealerships for purchasing a new 2008 RAV 4 Base FWD for my fiance' (Budget is tight, so we're trying to save a little by not choosing the 4WD). I just wanted to get some input from other experienced car shoppers out there. The best deal I found so far was through ganley toyota with the following breakdown: Base Price: $21,100 DR Roof Rack - $220.00 CF Carpet Floor/Cargo Mat Set - $199.00 CD Tonneau Cover - $140.00 AA 17" Styled Steel Wheel - $120.00 Destination Charge - $685.00 Total MSRP: $22,464 The dealer quoted the following: Selling Price: $20,699.00 Doc Fee: $250.00 Sales Tax (6.25%): $1309.31 Title Fee: $25.50 Total Price: 22,283.81 Is it really a decent deal? More room to negotiate? We are also comparing the Kia Sportage pricing, but her heart is really set on the RAV 4. Thoughts / Suggestions are appreciated.
Darwins theory strikes again ............? Ridding the world of morons. "A thrill-seeking father has been killed after playing a deadly game of 'car surfing' on the back of a moving van. Carpenter Raymond Higson, 33, leapt on the back step of a Fiat Doblo Cargo van as it stopped at traffic lights and clung onto its roof rack in a bid to hitch a ride home. But it is believed he then lost his grip further down the street and fell into the road suffering fatal head injuries." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1205704/Raymond-Higson-father-suffers-fatal-injuries-freak-accident-playing-car-surfing-moving-vehicle.html Because there seem to be so many people struggling with the concept of Darwin ........ he believed in survival of the fittest. The runts of any litter would die to ensure just the strongest grow up to breed. By ridding the world of this man who though it was clever to jump onto the back of a van on a public road and put himself and others in danger, it ensures he doesnt go on to breed any more morons. Steve - He's bred once, but at least we've ensured he cant breed again. We've minimized his impact on the world so to speak.
What vehicle is right for me? Hello. I am looking for a SUV/Crossover mainly for my huge cargo I need to take around everyday. I have a handicap child who has a wheelchair for daily use, a wheelchair for wheelchair racing, for wheelchair basketball, and and sled for sledge hockey. I definitely do not think I will but hulling around all those wheelchairs at once, at least 1 of those equipment will be in my trunk most likely will groceries or bags or some other things inside. This maybe will be the hardest part, I am looking in a price range up to AT MOST 35,000. I really do not want to spend 35,000 I just moved into a new house my car is a reck and I really don't have that money but I DO need a new car. As most possible, a good reliable, good quality and maybe even kind of fun for the kids with a DVD player, sun roof etc. 1 thing I do really prefer is to have one of those rear view cameras because I really am not good at parking . Summary: I live in Ontario, Canada My budget is AT MOST 35,000 I need good space I need a conferable car. I need quality THANKS SOOO MUCH!!! BTW: I've looked at cars like the Mazda GT-V6, GMC Terrine, VW Tiguan and a lot more. Just need to know if there is anything better out there. **** I have 2 children not just 1 handicap child. 1 handicap 1 not. I was looking for a wheelchair accessible mini van too. When I went to the shop there was barley any room more then half the car is taken up by a wheelchair and that means no room for other things that I may need to carry
Jeep liberty Tranny over heat warning light? I have a 05 jeep liberty about 60k on it. I was going camping last summer with the family here in arizona, for those of you that know the liberty, they have hardly no cargo room with the rear seats up. Anyways I put the kids side by side and flipped down the right section of the rear seat for more cargo space. WE were LOADED, a family tent, two 7 gallon coolers, 2 sleeping bags, two lanterns with propane, our luggage, about 5 blankets, pillows, chain saw, and 3 of those fold up in a bag chairs. and a fishing pole/tackle box. Couldn't see out the read window at all...I mean i had stuff packed up my two little boys feet on the floor board. Anyways we started driving up the rim which is a good 70 miles of constant up hill. about 40 miles in the light came on, i pulled over look at my manual, and instructed to shut off the car and wait till the light goes off. did that everything was good and went camping and since then the light has not come on, been about a year. I seem to be driving alot in overdrive going up that day, should i kick it down to 2nd gear? or just drive very slow?? I plan on purchasing a roof basket some time in the futur so all my weight isn't in the back it will be more evenly distributed also..but whats are your thoughts/experiences??
What kinda car/truck/van/whatever would i need? I wana spend a few days traveling and sleeping in the back of my vehicle. Kinda like that outback australian style. I was thinking on just buying a troop carrier military truck (the kind with the tarp roofs on the back), but the problem is that some days id wana go drive a motorcycle (suzuki style) and at other times id like to race a sports car around. I kinda wana keep the outdoors style though, which is why i like the idea of the military truck, because i could set up one of those folding up camping beds in the back along with my supplies n stuff. But somedays i feel the need for speed. I think if i used my truck like that id sling all my cargo out on the road, lol. But if i carried a motorcycle with me i would always have to return to where the truck is. Though i guess i could just park the truck near a city and drive the motorcycle in.... Well what kind of vehicle do you suggest would be able to serve as a living area too? RV seems kinda big :|
Is my idea of a Left 4 Dead 3 good?(redo)? Well, in my previous question, I said I was a HUGE FAN of the Left 4 Dead series and I actually made my OWN version of a Left 4 Dead 3 that won't be released...Poo... ANYWAYS, on with the show! Campaigns! Featuring 7 challenging, and extended campaigns! I. Dead City -The Radio Station- Use the tank artillery cannon to have it shoot and burn off the rubble that is blocking your path. -The Liftbridge- Lower the bridge and fight off the horde. Once the bridge is lowered, open the alarmed gate and run across the bridge to shut off the alarm and to re-lift the bridge to prevent any zombies from running across. -The City- Open the trailer and once the perimeter is breached, run to the tower to shut it off. Halfway through, you will stumble upon a cargo. Use the nearby crane to have it lift the cargo from your path. Make way to the hotel. Hotel- Use the radio near the elevator and the chopper pilot will tell you to use the elevator to get to the roof. Halfway down, the elevator will suddenly break and drop to the shaft. He will then ask about the noise and tell you to run up the stairs as quickly as possible! The finale will begin once you enter the staircase and up the 45 stories! II. Scary Movie - Woods- Use the chainsaw weapon to have it chop off the tree onto the house. Run along the trunk and over the fences. - Graveyard- Shoot the gas cans to have them burn down the wooden rubble. - Mall- Open the alarmed doors and search for the correct control panel. There will be 3 control panels and only one of them is the correct one. If you use an incorrect one, you've just summoned another endless horde on you. Only the correct panel can shut it off. - Parking Lot- Teehee! All cars in the parking lot are alarmed! And the worst thing is, you have to open the alarmed gate and run through the maze of cars and making sure you don't trip on any alarmed cars. -Cinema- 2 sides of the theater room is completely blown off. Play the movie and crank up the volume to signal the military rescue vehicle. YAY! Movies! III. Deep Fog - Suburbs- Just a panic event(alarmed car). The fog is not that thick...yet.. - Forest- Open the gate and run to the other side to shut it off. Don't use the wrong switch! There are 3 switches! The fog is pretty thick. - Junkyard- Use the wrecking ball vehicle to have it smash away the rubble. But remember to shut it off afterwards! You don't want it moving and swinging around, hitting random things! If you get hit once by the ball, you will get automatically incapacitated! Fog is getting thicker... - Factory- Open the alarmed door to find another alarmed door! Open that one to find another alarmed door! This is a new type of Crescendo called the Multi-Crescendo.Getting thicker...... - Hedgemaze- Signal the other side by using a flare. Then, once they signal back, run through the hedgemaze to get to the barnyard where rescue awaits! Very thick. Watch out! IV. Snow Warning - Subway- Turn on the train to have it take you through the subway tunnels. Light snow. - Park- Infested with crows that will ALWAYS activate a panic event. Medium snow. - Condos- Turn on the garage switch to have it open up for you. Blizzard. -School- You arrive at the rescue zone to find your rescuers DEAD. Scavenge 10 gas cans from the classrooms and fill up the snow-truck. Big Blizzard V. Hell Hail(identical to Hard Rain) - Hoods- Alarmed car. (no hail) - Village- Open the gate and run to the other side to close it. Halfway, you will stumble upon another gate, open that too and run! light hail -Village Escape- You got the gas, now go back through the gated village. Same as above, open open close... getting heavier -Return to Hoods- Panic Event heavy hail -Hoods Escape- You return to the site of where you parked your truck to find it completely totaled by the hail. But luckily, the heavy hail broke a fence for you. Head through the pathway behind the broken fence and get to the bus station and use the radio to summon a rescue. VI. Blood Ice -Streets- Panic Event. Watch out, you WILL slide into danger due to slippery grounds. - Townsquare- Talk to the store owner and he will tell you that he and his wife are in need of supplies. He will tell you to head down to the market right across the street and grab a pack of cola and the box of sandwiches. If you are playing Single-Player Offline, you will need to make the trip 2x. Deliver the cola and sandwiches to him and he will clear the path for you. Rink- The entire rink is fenced off on the outside. Use the race car outside to have it ram down the half-broken sign. Walk along the sign and jump into the ice rink INFESTED with Rollers. -Stadium- You are at the football stadium, where the Chargers are going against the Tanks! WEE! Signal the chopper by using a flare. VII- No Signal -Fire Department- Watch out for the alarmed TRUCKS. The horde that is summoned will have more zombies than alarmed cars. - Sewer- Infested with Boomers. Use the switch I dont know what happened to the rest of my details. :O But for the No Signal campaign, the other maps are Freeway, Town, and Apartment. :/ Sorry guys.... I wrote so much, i think that's why they shortened it............ The new infected are: 1. Hammer(boss infected) Large mallet-like hands 2. Druggy- Runs up to survivors and drugs them. Their vision will be blurry and they will see things that aren't there. Walking will be weird. 3. Roller- Curls into a ball and rolls at a survivor. Has rock-like skin on its back. 4. Eagle- First flying infected. Swoops down from the air and grabs a survivor. While in the air, it can drop the survivor and when it does, survivor will hit the ground and get incapped automatically.(realism = death) 5. Breaker- New boss. Grabs a survivor and either throws them or breaks their bones repeatedly. 6. Stinger- Stings a survivor with its tail. Survivor's health will rapidly deplete. New Survivors and their Sole Survivor Campaigns! Ling- Terminal Terminator Michael- Vicous Veteran Zack- Campus Killer Juan- Soccer Smasher No Signal continued: Sewer- Use the switch to have it open the door for you. Freeway- Infested with alarmed cars. Town- Use the forklift to have it lower a path for you. Apartment- Fight for "survival". Rescue will come after a period of time, just like in Survival Mode!. :) Oh yeah, and for Snow Warning, glows around Survivors in the snow will be faded, as well as in Deep Fog and Hell Hail! :D My opinion on my campaigns is that it will be very difficult on Expert mode, especially the Scary Movie campaign! LOL. New Event is called the Search Gauntlet Crescendo. HAHA that is very long! Also, 2 new modes will be added! Realistic Versus and Rush mode. Rush mode is basically a race! No saferooms, just checkpoints! Race to the finish line where rescue awaits, just like the Bridge finale from the Parish in L4D2!, except 4 times longer. Some Rush Mode maps are the Beach(Swimmer UCI exclusive!), a theme park, a hedgemaze, and a city! There is many more maps! The campaigns dont work well with this since Rush mode has NO crescendos and no waiting. Hence the name, Rush mode. Wouldn't that be AWESOME?! Every players dream. To rush and leave their friends behind. That's why I made it 4 versus 5. :) I cut out the idea of Survival Versus since I found out it would be ultra hard.

I have a 2005 Chrysler Sebring Convertible and I am travel a far ways and I don't need a trailer, but I can't have a Roof Top Cargo Carrier, obviously. But what kind can I get for my car and does anyone know where to find one for my car? I found many cargo carriers online and a couple at Uhaul.. but I'm having a hard time find one to fit my particular car.
