Kayak owners--yakima roof racks. Can you fit 2 of them side by side? My husband and I each have a small kayak. Emotion comets. under 10 ft. We drive a Hyundai Santa Fe with factory roof racks. http://www.rei.com/product/801042 We are looking at a Yakima roof rack and are debating between a couple of different ones. The Mako Aero saddles are the top runner and they will be on sale for Labor Day, but I can't find any evidence as to if I can fit 2 of those at the same time. http://www.rei.com/product/767992 The Hull Raiser is the 2nd choice. http://www.rei.com/product/753408 We are just wanting to take the kayak out around, so less than 30 miles or so. I'm not looking for a system for trucking across the US, nor do we have expensive kayaks. Does anyone out in cyberland know if you can fit 2 saddle style holders on a roof rack? Or do you need to have an upright design no matter how small the kayak? It's only a $50 difference in price but I'd hate to buy the wrong one, find out it doesn't fit and miss the sale price.
Anyone use a handirack kayak roof rack? I am considering using a handirack kayak roof rack. Thule and Yakima do not make a roof rack for my new car. Has anyone had experience with this type of roof rack? Does it scratch the roof? Is it stable at highway speed? http://www.maloneautoracks.com/inflatable.html
Kayak roof carrier recommendations? We just bought a kayak from a relative and need to buy a kayak carrier for the top of the car roof rack. I have a Ford Focus wagon with the standard factory installed roof rack. The kayak is a 9.5 foot long recreational sit-in kayak. There seem to be a number of different types of kayak carriers, and I was wondering if anyone has a certain type or brand that they like? Thanks.
roof racks, kayaks, saturn vues and no luggage rack? I have a saturn vue, new in 2007. This vehicle did not come with a luggage rack. I have two kayaks that i want to attach to my car and drive a long distance going roughly 70 mph. It appears i'll have to install a permanent system, but i'm at a loss of where to start. Does anyone have any advice on where to buy luggage racks and then kayak carriers, or if there is an all in one set? Thanks!
Kayak roof rack for a 2007 Mazda 3 4dr? I'm looking to buy a roof rack system for my 2007 Mazda 3 4dr for up to 2 kayaks. Do you know of a good setup? and/or one that is reasonably priced? What about a setup that I should stay away from?
Kayak roof rack for a volvo? I have a 1995 volvo 850 sedan, but it doesn't have the bars necessary for a roof rack system. Are there any systems that don't require these bars?
What's the easiest-loading kayak roof rack? I need to be able to load my kayak onto my Honda Civic by myself. After using foam blocks last year--which cost me a $1200 paint job--I need to install a rack. Health problems make lifting, moving, and maneuvering my kayak a real challenge, so I am looking for the easiest possible way to do it. It appears that Thule's Slipstream or Hullavator are the easiest to use. While the Hullavator looks like it might be easier, it still requires one to lift the kayak off the ground. Two questions: (1) Are there other good-quality models (including Yakima) that would be just as easy or easier to use? (2) Between the Slipstream and the Hullavator, which would make loading the kayak the easiest? Anybody have experience with both? Thanks!
Length of items on roof racks in California? Does anyone know the allowable length for items on a roof rack in California? I have a kayak that is one foot (12") longer than my car. It will go past the front and rear bumpers by 6" when attached to my roof rack. Is this legal?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of these kayak tie-down techniques? I see some people carry kayaks strapped flat to the roof/roof rack while others put the kayaks on their sides. I have a standard SUV roof rack (not a kayak rack) and I am wondering which way I should secure my kayak. I use locking cam straps and have laid the kayak flat in the past, but I'm open to change if there is better way. Any suggestions?
How to I strap down my kayak to a roof rack? I recently got an 8ft kayak. I need to a cheap way to transport it on my roof rack. It seems like a lot of carriers are just some pieces of foam that you put on the roof. Do you eve need the pieces of foam or lay it flat on the rack? Or can you just get any type of foam to use for it? And also how do I tie it down to the front of the car? I have a tracker. I am looking for a good cheap way to do this and any info would help. I already have several rachet straps that I could use to tie it down.

How do you keep kayaks safe from theft on a roof rack? My hubby and I are finally buying our own kayaks this week. I have a roof rack on my crossover SUV, so I think we'll be able to find a method to secure them. But how do you keep them secure when traveling? We'll be taking them on a week-long trip this summer and staying in motels. Are there special locks or any other tips?
How can I carry my kayak on top of my car? I just got a new car so I have to find a new way to carry my kayak. I don't have a roof rack. I would like to consider getting the J type carriers but I think they have to be attached to a roof rack. Is my only option to use the grey foam pieces and strap it down? I was hoping to get another kayak down the road and be able transport both of them together on top of my car.

Do i absolutely have to have a fancy roof rack system in order to transport a kayak? I'm looking into get a kayak, well my boyfriend and I are. We're students and I've seen what kind of an expense its going to be just to get a rack on our car (and we've still got the cost of the kayaks and accessories themselves!)....my question to you is....is it ABSOLUTELY necessary? Is there some way of using chords or other things to do the job? For the most part we will not be travelling long distances with them....we have a lake about 5-10 mins away...but we would like to take them with us to the cottage (its about 3 hours away) once or twice.... What would be a good roof rack for a 2001 Ford Ranger (Reg. size) with a cap? My husbands birthday is coming up and I know that he has been wanting a Roof rack for his truck (2001 Ford Ranger) for sometime now (for canoes, kayaks etc.) He has a cap on the back which usually stays on so I think he would want one for on top of it. I know nothing about vehicles. Any suggestions on what type of roof rack or a specfic one I should get would be helpful! Thanks!
Good roof bike racks? I have a 2009 honda civic sedan and need to get a bike rack. I wanted to get one that mounts on the roof and is capable of carrying other items, like skis, kayaks, ect. Anyone have any good suggestions for a good bike rack? Also, information about how you mount them on the roof would be helpful as well. Should I take it somewhere to put it on, or would that be something i would be able to do myself?

Best Roof Rack for 1997 Volvo 850? I have a 1997 Volvo 850 with no rails and am looking for a roof rack the primary use of which will be for transporting 2 kayaks. So the roof rack I need has to have a system of attaching that doesn't require pre-installed rails, crossbars, and needs to be reliable. Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks! its a station wagon by the way
instead of buying a kayak rack, would a towel suffice? i'm buying a kayak, but i don't have enough to buy a rack for it. so i thought maybe i could buy the ropes to hold it tightly to my car, and put a towel underneath the kayak so it wont scratch up my car's roof. is that a good idea..? i know it's cheap and doesn't look very cool, riding with a towel on top of my car, but will it adequatly suffice?
Transporting 4 kayaks safely with a roof rack and a ute? I'm going to be using 3 kayaks and a canoe, and I'm concerned about transporting them. I'm going to use my friend's four wheel drive that by memory has a standard roof rack and my other friend who is going to use his ute. This is my first time using them and I figured I should find out if any problems will occur by using these two methods, I was going to try and tie 2 down tight on the 4x4 and find out a way to put 2 in the back of the ute. What else should I do? Am I missing anything like covers or something?
Kayak Trailer suggestions? I just bought a new car. I checked with Thule and Yakima and they do not make roof racks for my vehicle (yet). I am thinking of getting a kayak trailer - even if they eventually make roof racks for my car, getting my 16' kayak on top of my old car was getting to be a pain in my back! Any suggestions for a kayak trailer? There seem to be so many choices online, I can't decide. Thanks!
Kayak transport with foam blocks? I have a kayak. I have a Saturn Vue (07) with no roof rack. I also have a job that requires me to bring my kayak to the job site tomorrow, which is located 1.5 hours from home (along the expressway). I'm leary about transporting a kayak on foam blocks with tie downs on the highway, and don't have time to get a roof rack installed. Any pointers? Not taking it is not an option, so I need to figure something out! Thanks!
Mercury Mariner 2008 roof weight capacity? My owner's manual says the Mariner can carry a maximum of 100 pounds on the roof. Is this because the factory installed roof rack can not handle more? I am looking to transport two kayaks (approx 120lbs total) on the roof. I am hoping that a new roof rack will solve the problem.
need to transport Kayak? I am in the process of buying a kayak right now and I dont have a way to transport it, I have a trailblazer ss and it does not have a roof rack and I noticed kayak trailers are really expensive, so has anyone out there ran into this problem, and how did they fix it would it be better to buy a used boat trailer. Looking for a used car for the rest of college? I am looking to buy a car soon. Just looking for some idea's at this point but wanted some input. I am a college student so I need something that is cheap to fix and good on gas. I would also love something that I can throw my bike on and maybe a kayak (roof rack compatible). Ideally something that is good in the winters since I do love to drive in the snow. Price range is about 7-8k so obviously used. What car models and brands (I love some year's to look for too) should I look to test drive? Thanks for the help!
What type of kayak should I go for? Me: I am about 5'8, 135 lbs., and a "beginner." I have kayaked the last two summers on a shallow river using a sit on top kayak, and prefer to fall out, rather than learn to barrel roll. Conditions: I just moved to an area that has a fairly shallow river (especially with the drought) to kayak on as well as a lake. I'd also like to maybe try kayaking at the beach. I'm thinking the lake would probably be where I'd kayak most of the time, considering it's easier to get back to point A there. Parameters: I live in a 3rd floor apartment, with not a ton of storage space for a kayak. I do have an SUV with a roof rack for transport, but don't have a lot of muscle to hoist one up there. Other considerations: A 50 lb. dog I'd like to take with, if possible (an "experienced" kayaker in his own right!). Also, would be interested in 2 seaters, for either the dog or a pal. What kinds of kayaks should I be looking at? Inflatable vs. hard shell, river vs. ocean kayak, etc. Thanks for any advice
What girl you you date and why? what girl would you find more attractive based on personality, and what makes her more attractive... Girl A) is into makeup, partys, painted fingernails, a new hair do, coloured hair, she drives a pink car and if often 'spending time with the girls', her goal in life, in to live in a really nice house and have beautifull children Girl B) loves camping, and weekends are often filled with skateboarding around and rock climbing with the boys. she drivers a ute, often with the kayak on the roof racks, and her dream is to travel to world
Is there any difference between various roof rack brands: Yakima, Thule? I'm looking to buy a roof rack system for my 2007 Audi S4 sedan. QUESTION 1: Is there a difference between the Thule system and the Yakima systems? I want to use it to carry the following things (in order of importance & frequency of use) 1) One tandem bike (MAY NOT HAVE QUICK RELEASE FRONT WHEEL) 2) Two mountain bikes, each with disc brakes. 3) Two, one-person kayaks 4) One of those roof pod things (an extra trunk of sorts). QUESTION 2: Is there any sense in looking for used equipment, or is a roof rack system pretty tailored to a particular make, model and year of car?
Can I carry two kayaks on the rooftop with foam pad blocks on a 4 door sedan? I have two small kayaks and would like to save money by buying the foam pads rather than an expensive roof rack system. I have a four door car and would like to secure them directly to the roof. I would probably not travel more than an hour with them. Would I be able to safely transport both kayaks without damaging kayaks or car?
Can a roof rack be installed on a 2008 Jeep Liberty that has the "SkyRider" retractable sunroof? I have a 2008 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition with the SkyRider roof. Check out http://www.jeep.com/en/2008/liberty/ Thule and Yakima cannot fit this vehicle with their online fit guide. I have been to Mopar.com, but since the Liberty Sport and Limited Edition can be made with or without the retractable sunroof, I don't know if what is available through them is compatible with the sunroof? Am I S.O.L? Has anyone seen a roof rack on this vehicle? I have a pair of kayaks and no way to transport.
whats the most inexpensive way to move a canoe by car? its a 16' mohawk fiberglass canoe. i have a van. whats the most inexpensive way to move it? probly on the roof im guessing. but i would need to buy a kayak rack right? theres no way to just tie it down securly with just rope? any other suggestions on moving it? thanks
How to best transport kayak? We have two kayaks that we want to be able to use, but we only have a 4 door Saturn L200 and a 2 door Toyota Celica. We can't afford to have an entire roof rack system installed, so we're wondering if there are any temporary systems that would work on a sedan? Or, should I just use rope, foam, & carpeting and knot the heck out of them? Any idea whether two kayaks are even going to fit on an L200? The kayaks are approx 12" in depth and 24" width. Serious replies only please. Reminder: We have TWO that we need to transport at the same time!
Can I take any of these Kayaks in the ocean? I'm looking into buying a Kayak, they have a few affordbale ones in Dicks, the main question I have is if I purchase one of these are they mainly for fresh water or can I take them into the ocean? Mind you I'm not going to be taking this thing into the Atlantic or anything, just dropping it off and floating around the RI and MA beach areas. I've read a few posts about them and alot of people are saying get a Prijon but the cheapest one I found was $1k and I don't feel like spending that much, the ones at Dick are anywhere from $150-$400. Also I have an 03 Ford Focus and I'm looking for roof racks (for said Kayak), the only ones I can find are the universal ones which I'm not too fond of, anyone know if they make factory fit ones?
Attaching multiple Kayaks to a car? Any experience with this?? I had to trade my Jeep Grand Cherokee in this year because of the rediculous $$ of my payment & gas. I leased a 2008 Jetta & purchased the roof rack attachments from the dealer (they run from door to door, no side pieces) I have 2 kayaks - one fits into the J rack which can be installed on one side with plenty of room to place the other one flat on blocks (It is a Native Ultimate 12 has a "tunnel hull" & wont fit in the J rack - http://kayakfishingstuff.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Ultimate12-08&Category_Code=nativekayaks) Not having the rack connections that run from hood to trunk, how am I going to ensure these kayaks aren't going to rip off the top of my car? The engine is covered underneath w/ 2 places to insert a hook to tie down the front end, but under the trunk there is no place to tie the back down. Does anyone have these type of racks that can suggest a way to secure these? Should I find an attachment that runs from front to back? Thanks
